The Big Spend: A Buy Local Event

Saturday, July 25th, 2020

Do you want to help boost our local economy and support Nanaimo businesses?

Participate in The Big Spend!

Local small businesses make our communities run. They support community events and sponsor sports teams. They also provide nearly 70% of all private sector jobs in Canada. They have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we want to support their recovery in the same way they have supported our communities time and again.

Help to revive the Canadian economy by following these 3 easy steps:

Step 1

On Saturday, July 25th, make an intentional purchase at a locally owned business.

Step 2

Report that purchase on TheBigSpend.com so Nanaimo can be recognized across Canada for supporting its local economy.

Step 3

Share a photo about your Big Spend on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #TheBigSpend and tag the business you shopped at to show your support.

Why buy local?

To put it simply, when you buy local more money stays in the community.

Research in Canada has shown that money spent with local businesses generates almost 5 times more revenue than larger corporate competitors. For example, a study conducted in BC found that for every $100 spent with a BC local business, $63 was re-circulated back into the BC economy (versus $14 for multinational corporations). That means they re-circulate 4.6 times more revenue in the local economy.

When we add the benefits of buying local to the positive impact of what economists call the “multiplier effect” we help create a snowball of growth for our communities, and our country as a whole.
